Challenge / FINAL deliverable: To create of a series of 10 illustrations on a topic of your choosing.

The first steps to this design challenge was to think of ideas for 10 illustrated cards. I immediately thought of doing something with dogs, or flowers, but eventually decided on "if apps were people" aka tumblr is the hipster and pinterest is the over-prepared team mom. I decided I didn't like this idea because it was too reliant on text, which I later learned we weren't supposed to have. SO, I went back to the dogs, and decided to do "dogs dressed as Harry Potter characters". My goal is to make each dog visually look like a character, so different breeds will represent different characters. Below are my mind map and my 20 initial sketches of my idea. I also toyed with the idea of drawing classic cartoon dogs.

Now the images below consist of the fallen victims of this challenge. Below are the mind map to the "other" ideas as well as the 5 sketches. I actually really liked some of these ideas, I just had trouble coming up with 10 different variations. I didn't want to have to try to make things that clearly didn't fit work, so these ideas weren't the best options for execution. I especially liked the flower idea, mostly because I think it would be the most aesthetically pleasing out of everything I thought of.

Four Variations

These are my variations of four different ideas that I had. The first is image traced, the second has added elements, the third is colorized, and the fourth has a background added. I struggled with the image tracing throughout these variants, mostly because it was extremely hard to decide if I wanted a realistic looking dog, or more drawn out. I had to merge a ton of shapes within each image together to get the look that I wanted. I enjoyed adding things to each image to make it different and fit the theme of what I was going for. Lastly, I think that the colorizing each image helped to make the whole thing more cohesive and give it the same sort of vibe.

The Final 10

Here are the final ten. I decided to stick with the same background, just to make the variations that much more cohesive. Image tracing was a nightmare, but it was hard to find illustrated images of the specific dog breed that I was looking for. I think I like most of them (maybe about seven?) but I like the overall vibe they have with each other. I think the middle bottom three look pretty different as far as the style goes. They all look so much more realistic than the other ones, and I'm not sure how I feel about it. I do like the finished product a lot, and I'm glad that I stuck with my idea. My idea is a little ridiculous, but I'm glad that I ended up doing something a little more interesting than my original ideas. My only hope is that my idea is at least a little apparent when someone else looks at it. It might seem a little vague, but I guess you would have to know what Harry Potter is in the first place.
